Andhra Mahila Sabha Arts & Science College for Women:
Andhra Mahila Sabha Arts & Science College for Women, established in 1968 in Hyderabad, (A.P) is affiliated to Osmania University. Spread over an area of 5.16 acres the College is situated on the campus of Osmania University and is admitted to UGC
under 12(f) 2(B). UGC has conferred autonomous status of the college in 2007 for a period of 5 years.

The Arts & Science College for Women, Andhra Mahila Sabha was inaugrated on 14th July 1968, by Sri Morajaji Desai, the then Deputy Prime Minister of India. The college has been serving in the field of Higher Education for women for the last 40 Years.

Padmavibhushan Dr.Durga Bai Deskmukh , the founder President of the college managed this institution for more than a decade in tune with her ideals and principles and worked for the empowerment of women. Later, her successors too cherished the valuable ideals of their leader and followed her footsteps and worked up to her expectations. The college is fortunate enough to have eminent personalities like Justice Gangadhar Rao, Justice Jeevan reddy, Sri V.P.Rama Rao, Prof. Vanaja Iyengar and Prof.C.Lakshmanna served as the Chair persons of the Governing Body. At present it is Prof Y.Saraswathi Rao (former Vice-Chancellor Sri Krishna Devaraya University) who is looking after the affairs of the college in her capacity as the Chair Person .

With imposing buildings, spacious lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories, the Campus instills spirit of education. Exclusive Learning Resource Centre, a building of Architectural value having books of archival value, as well as modern lures the knowledge seekers. Well equipped laboratories, Auditorium, Sports Facilities, Hostel accommodation, Mess/ Canteen facility, Health Centre, Placement Centre. Livelihood Centre are additional attractions of the institution.

The College offers undergraduate (7) and post-graduate (1) courses under aided and self-financing sections. The teaching staff numbering 42 are a team of qualified, dicated, committed and service-oriented workers who spare no efforts for the integrated development of the student and the institution. Following the footsteps of the founder President, Dr. (Smt.) Durgabai Deshmukh, the faculty aims at imparting value added education to the students. The College is known for the qualitative and quantitative results. The faculty ever enthusiastic and innovative have initiated number of rogrammes and projects for the benefit of students keeping in view the changing trends and values.

LIBRARY
“A LABORATORY OF LEARNING KNOWLEDGE RESOURCE CENTRE”


Our library is one of the oldest libraries in twin cities, established in 1968, With a carpet area of 658 sq .ft covering 95 cup boards with a seating capacity of 90 visitors. This library caters to the needs of about 1580 users comprising students as well as staff. The Library is the backbone of the academic activities of the college and plays a vital role in Teaching, Learning & Research. At present the library has in its stock about 30,000 books, covering a variety of subjects. It also receives 9 current journals on different subjects to facilitate current reading.

MPLAD Computer Training Centre


MPLAD Computer Training Centre was launched in the Year 1998 under the MPLAD Scheme. Late Sri K.m.Khan , the then member of the parliament donated an amount of Rs. 10 lakh for promoting computer literacy. The main objective of the programme is to impart Training to all the Non-Computer Students of First Year B.A, B.Com and B.Sc (BZC and MPE) in Basics of Computers. This Centre has a separate Computer Lab with 12 Systems, LAN connected, Internet facility, Printer, UPS etc.This programme has entered its 9th year.


Hostel


The College has a well-guarded Students hostel in the College premises with a capacity to accommodate 105 students. The hostel is well furnished with spacious rooms and good ventilation. In addition, there is a separate mess facility with a spacious dining hall which can accommodate 150 students at a time.
       While the principal functions as the chief warden of the hostel, there is an assistant warden who is a full time employee. The movementsof the hostelites and visiting hours of the guests are strictly regulated. The Durga Bai Deshmukh Hospital takes care of the emergencies of health. There is also a hostel Committee to assist the assistant Warden.


Student Support


The college recognizes the fact that success of any institution or activity depends upon participation by all concerned. Students are the prime stakeholders of performance of the college. Students involvement in all the activities of the college right from decision– making will enhance the quality performance. The college plans to involves students more and more in academic / cultural / social activities of the college and also make them equal participants in decision-making.


Placement Services provided to students


The Career Guidance and Placement Cell of the College is headed by a Co-ordinator. The function of the cell is to provide information on competitive examinations and career options available to all the students.
• The cell invites individuals and institutions to the campus to address the students and guide them about the various avenues open to them and motivate them to pursue higher ducation. Example: Time institute, Success Academy, ICFAI, IMS Learning Resources Private Ltd., Opulent Us overseas, Prism Academy, Cynosure Academy, Lions Club, Vivekananda institute of Higher Excellence.
• Clippings about academic opportunities and career avenues are displayed on the various notice boards.
• Personality Development classes are organised to strengthen the communication Skills and Soft Skills of the students besides individual lectures organised on Personality Development.
• The cell identifies advanced learners who are given necessary Support to appear for scholarship exams, To appear for interviews and to attend job melas etc

Tours and Field Visits

College organises Botanical tours, general excursions, visit to libraries of CIEFEL, OU, IICT, CCMB, NRSA etc. Visits are also organised to Banks & other financial institutions besides Industrial tours.


Literary Club


To bring out a change in the outlook of students and help them to grow the literary club “PLUG-IN” is launched. The activities of the club are Group discussions, debates, creative writing and publication of a News letter.

Consumer Club


To extend the non-formal pro-active system of imparting consumer education to students by involving them in various consumer welfare and consumer protection activities “consumer club” is created.
Activities
- Arranging guest lectures on consumer awareness.
- Display of poster.
- Conducting essay writing / elocution / quiz competitions.
- TRUMPET – A Newsletter is published by the Consumer Club.


Cultural Club

Students are encouraged to participate at University State National level Cultural Activities. They are also encouraged to participate in Radio and Doordarshan programmes.


Eco-Club


For protecting the environment and for sustainable development students of the Department of Botany have launched Eco-club.


Entrepreneur Development Cell


To encourage entrepreneurship among the students, college conducts FETE, Exhibitions,  organizes visits to industrial units, (Specially managed by women etc) Guest lectures are also organised.


Sports

The college recognizes that physical health is as important as academic health for the students. The sports Department is very active and provides facilities like in- door games like chess, caroms, TT and out door games like Tennikoit, Kho-Kho, Throw ball etc. Special coaching is given to students in all these sports. Various events are conducted for sports Day.
College offers certificate course in Yoga and Meditation.
(The college bagges gold medals and silver medals in Yoga Tournaments)

College is equipped with T.V, VCR, DVD, LCD, OHPs, besides audio, videocassettes on education.
Mana TV
Students are exposed to the academic programmes telecast on KU Band of Government of A.P regularly.


Legal Councelling Cell ASHRAYA

ASHRAYA offers legal Counseling to students in collaboration with the sister institution i.e., College of Law, AMS and Raksha.


Psychological Councelling Cell ATMEEYA

Atmeeya provides guidance and support to adolescent girls struggling with conflicting life situations and maladjustments with both self and society. The institution believes that the Adolesent Girls need support and guidance. Counseling is done to overcome the problems of discontinuing education besides handling academic pressure, emotional strain, low self esteem problems and depression.


Grievance Redressal Cell

Student aspirations and goals change in a fast –changing world. That system of Higher Education, which is ready to honor them and shape its curricular and administrative performance accordingly, is alone relevant. Students should be made partners in planning and governance.
       They are not just the ‘recipients’ of that which is imposed on them without sensitivity to their changing needs & organisations. Feed back System helps in opening and strengthening a transport communication channel between students, teachers and administrators. It helps in modifying and/ or restructuring the course content. It also helps in improving the teacher’s teaching. It strengthens the overall sense of belonging to the institute. It enables them to  think, evaluate and give constructive suggestions.

Parent-Teacher meetings are held twice in a year to discuss the progress & problems of the students Health centre

- Activities to build confidence and enable girls to work towards empowerment including violence against women and people’s rights.
- Organises lectures on life skills including health, reproductive health, sanitation, nutrition, family planning, HIV/AIDS.
- Exposing girls to laws affecting women with the assistance from AMS Law College.


Population Education Cell


Creates awareness among young students about the need for
- improving the ‘Quality of Life’.
- spread the message of the National Population Policy.
